the power of positive

i came across this on the internet somewhere and i loved it so much
i printed it and have a copy posted to my tack board at the office.

language is powerful and i truly believe our words shape how we look
at ourselves and the world, and that when we have positive thoughts in
our minds, we speak them more often and we view the world as a beautiful
place to live.

because words have this kind of power, i am always looking at ways
to help me speak in a more positive way, to my kids {and my hubby}.
this list is so wonderful, I thought i'd share with you too.

grade school grossness

parents of grade school kids barely blink when these messages arrive in their email inbox.
{well first time parents might be shocked} but seasoned parents understand this happens.

Hello Families,

We have several cases of lice reported in Room 14.
Please check your child's hair daily for nits (head lice eggs) and lice.
Please note that sometimes the only way you can identify that your child
has nits or lice is to comb through your child's hair with a nit and lice removing comb.
You can find this type of comb at the drug store.

if you see any evidence of nits or lice in your child's hair,
please do NOT send your child to school.
All nits and head lice must be removed from your child's hair
BEFORE he/she may return to school so we can stop the
current outbreak of lice in our classrooms.
Please take a few minutes to view the following video that provides detailed
instructions on how to identify and remove nits and lice:

Thank you very much for being diligent in
checking your child's hair for nits and lice.

~ oh life with grade school kids - it's SO fun.  *grin*
we were lucky this time around - we are all in the clear.
two years ago, we weren't so lucky.

though it was just finn that got them, the whole family
was treated and i spent a full day washing.
as my s-i-l pointed out, at least we don't have girls.
with all the hair on my head, i can't imagine the work it would
take to get through my daughter's hair. {scout's hair is thick enough} whew!
kudos to my mom who raised 5 girls and went through this many times i'm sure.
{according to this article, they are a more common in girls}

fab find: Q&A 3 year journal for kids

i was perusing anthropologie a week ago
{for no good reason since i had no money to shop},
but i was so glad i wandered in because i found this
awesome little book in the back of the store.

it's so cleverly written.
each page includes a single question and a few lines
for writing in a response for each of the 3 years.

some sample questions:
what made you laugh today
- if you could fly right now, where would you go
- what are
you passionate about

these questions are easy to answer and fun too.
since writing is not one of finn's passions or strengths,
a traditional journal would never work for him,
but this one would.

i picked it up and presented it to him on his actual
birthday {along with his special breakfast}.
i'm not sure who's enjoying this little book more,
finn or christopher and me.

all i know is it's a hit at home and we have scoutie
asking for one for his next birthday.

done.

~ finn's birthday post to come eventually. i didn't get but a handful of photos.
it was an evening party and i don't have the proper flash for night time photography.
he had a great celebration - claiming it was his best party EVER.
{i think he said that last year too}. *grin*

summer sweets: cute cupcakes

summer is almost over for the boys {one week left}
and these cute cupcakes are the cutest i've seen in a long time.
i really want to make them before they go back.

via

the boys would have fun decorating these and even
more fun eating them but gosh, i hope it cools down.
we're still having unusually warm weather and
the thought of being near a hot oven doesn't sound fun.

i need to visit weather.com and see what's in the forecast.
my fingers will be crossed we get some relief soon.

on another topic, we couldn't do our family funday on sunday because
c needed to work all day to prepare for the opening of another school,
high tech middle north county. {hope to post about later and include pixs}.
this one is another GREEN school that boasts photovoltaics on the roof.
pretty cool stuff.

while he was busy directing crews on sunday,
i hung with my little men for most of the day.
we stayed in target for almost 3 hours shopping, browsing,
enjoying their air-conditioning, and yeah, spending too much.
later scoutie and i even took a nap.
it was heaven! {i really should do that more often}

submarine sandwhich

work has been CRAZY and with finney's birthday
celebration this past weekend, i'm tired.
so tired i'm going to bed early...before 9pm.

i have downloaded birthday photos,
but i haven't gone through them all yet.
my goal is to get to later this week or
this weekend at the very latest.

in the meanwhile, i thought i'd post this cute submarine sandwhich.
i re-created it using a football shaped cookie cutter and put in finn's
lunchbox last week on his birthday as a little surprise.

absolutely adorable yes? {or rather 'cool' as the boys would say}

to bed i go. i'm getting up earlier than usual tomorrow
to look at a home our realtor friend emailed us tonight.
i'm not holding my breath but we'll see...
